JEEPERS CREEPERS--DOLL HEADS and ROBOTS!!!

Saturday, February 28, 2009 Edit This 3 Comments »
HELLO!!!!! I haven't forgotten about you--I have been on mental hiatus from blogging, and have been praticing becoming a human vegetable, playing games all week on the computer. It's been a year and half of blogging, and almost every day I have posted, and sometimes more than once...so I took a much deserved break!! But, I am back now!!

This is my latest find. This old doll head was given to me yesterday!! I literally squealed with joy. LOL..the man looked at me like I had cut my own head off...but, I was beyond excited!! I can make this beautiful with the info that I learned in JoAnna Peirotti's class!! The hair on this doll is MAGNIFICENT. It's a beautiful deep red, and in excellent condition!! Just remember this scary creature--and in a couple of days, I will show you her "make-over"...LOL..

Now..onto ROBOTS...Nature Boy has been creating again--I told him he was going to have to get his own blog, and that I wasn't MARKETING him too...LOL..(Though, he has an appointment to take his Folk Art Canes to a GALLERY on Friday..hhahaha). I haven't showed you the canes and walking sticks that he has been making, but he's sold two of them so far, for decent money, so...while I was talking to a gallery owner about MY art, I threw Nature Boy's art in there too..so, the man is excited about our little husband and wife team..hehee.

This are assemblage robots. Very cool! He's not completely done with them, so I didn't take very good pics, but they are AWESOME!! I am going to hang them on our wall...until someone wants to buy them..LOL.
Well, it's nasty and rainy, so I am going to go hide in the studio, and try to play catch up today. Monday morning, I go to install my first retail store display of my art. I am very excited!! I have been making appointments, applying for art shows, and all kinds of stuff this week...I'll tell you more as it comes up!

I SWEAR THIS IS WHAT I STARTED WITH..LOL

Sunday, February 22, 2009 Edit This 10 Comments »

The above picture is an old image that I either have, or have picked up somewhere. I have tried to paint it twice. I was going to use a paint-over technique that I read in Stampington. It was going to be fast and easy, and I would be able to have a cute painting...Well..the portrait (which surprised me, the way it came out) in my last post, and the moon man (work-in-progress) BOTH started out as this picture of two little girls. I lightened it in Photoshop, I tore around it, I glued it to my canvas...LOL..I didn't know what to say about the portrait in the last post. Technically, I used this technique..but, I ended up painting something different, and well...as you see..the moon man doesn't look anything like what I started with either..LOL...I also tried this technique on the two blue men painting that I showed a week or so ago. I get frustrated that the painting isn't looking like I want it to, and take a brayer, and roll white paint over the entire thing, and then..it's like POOF..I can paint. The other two paintings just flew out of me..this one is causing me distress..LOL...I see a blue naked lady under the watchful moon, but will not allow myself to paint a nude. (I personally don't like nudes). Sigh..the troubles of an artist..LOL...

Tonight, SHE WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING and I went to see CORALINE in 3-D. The movie was good, and it was fun to spend time with SWKE..but, the seats in the theatre leaned back, and put me in a slouchy position, which drives me completely insane. It's one thing that I can't deal with. I want to sit straight up, shoulders against the back of the chair. I am the same way in a car. I want my seat, straight up, or I will be miserable. A tad bit of "too much information about my obsessiveness" for ya...LOL. On the other note, the movie was cool, and inspiring..I think I am going to make me some dragonflies, and attach them with string and clothespins around the studio--because I really liked them in the movie. SWKE was a joy! I miss her a lot!

Well, I am off to finish the painting, and make some clay something or another...I guess I will be up for a while, since I have already went to bed, and woke up (all before midnight)...

GOOD HAPPY MORNING!! GRISELDA--MY NEW ART DOLL!!

Friday, February 20, 2009 Edit This 6 Comments »

Just crawling out of bed, and having coffee this morning--thought I would show you my huge pile of old watch parts, and my little tins. This seriously had to be a mistake. The booth that they came from -- the guy pieces everything out individually--and for me to get a case, and all of this, had to be an oversight on his part. It was sitting on the floor--LOL--BUT--it had a sticker on it..LOL..oh well...I am excited though!! The possibilities are ENDLESS!!
Here's the latest edition of the art doll family--Her name is Griselda, and she has a blue stone bird on her head!!

Well..off to work now. I hope you all have a wonderful happy day!!

SOME PEOPLE I'D LIKE YOU TO MEET--

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 Edit This 6 Comments »
Hello!! What a day!! I will tell you about it, as soon as I introduce you to my new "friends". This is FiFi--She's from Paris, and loves anything having to do with the Eiffel Tower, and vintage buttons. Even her little "french" hat is a vintage button. She measures almost 12 inches tall, and is made out of parts from an old tin toy, a handpainted Paper Clay face, wire, buttons, and other stuff. She's $40 (that includes her shipping).

SOLD

Next, we have AQUA..our pretty little mermaid princess. She hoards a great many treasures on her, and though she looks as sweet as can be--watch your sparklies when she's around. She's a sneaky one. AQUA measures 12 inches long, is made of old, rusty tin, a handpainted Paper Clay face, and many, many little sparkling jewels. She is $40 (includes her shipping).

Next, we have FLORA--she's a gardener, who gathers her flowers daily--while singing along with the birds. She lives with her thoughts in the clouds, and is generally a very sweet, happy soul. Flora is made of old rusty tin, a handpainted Paper Clay face, a vintage crocheted hankie, paper flowers, and more. She measures approx. 11 inches long. Flora is $40 (this includes her shipping).

Next we have BOB. Bob is generally a good guy, but sometimes tells stories with some holes in them. Love him, but don't believe everything he tells you. Bob is made from a vintage tin toy, old rusty tin, a handpainted Paper Clay face, and more. He measures approx. 10 inches long. Bob is only $35 ( that includes his shipping).

Now, to introduce you to "friends" that I met through Nature Boy. Nature Boy made these two. This one is Earth. Nature Boy constructed her out of black loctus wood, handcarving her hair. She has attached tiny earrings, and some serious body parts. Her face is made of handpainted Paper Clay, and she measures 8 inches long. Earth is $40 (this includes her shipping).

Nature Boy's next "friend" is FIRE. She is carved from a cedar post, with a handpainted Paper Clay face, and body parts from an antique cash register. FIRE measures approx. 10 inches long, and is $40 (includes her shipping).

Hope you all enjoyed meeting our newest "friends"...

Now, on to today!! Whew!! I had a blast! I drove Nature Boy to college, and when I dropped him off, I went thrifting....The first place that I stopped didn't have much, but I bought an old fire screen for near to nothing, then I hit the second place--and wwwwwwwooohooooo...JACKPOT #1!! I found an old Bauer Pottery Ringware Bowl in green, a vaseline glass soda fountain glass, and LOTS of metal STUFF...an old typewriter, some bottles, and MORE METAL STUFF..(I loveee the metal STUFF..hehehe)...I got all of this, and there was a PILE for a mere $20...Then I went down the street, and stopped at an antique store...there I found some old tins, and a metal cabinet (the kind that has plastic drawers--for nails and stuff), and inside it was a gazillion tiny metal tins, and all of them were FULL of old watch parts. Faces, cogs, etc...JEWELRY making HEAVEN!! (Now, all I have to do is learn how to make jewelry..LOL) I have enough watch parts to last me a longggg time...Ok..so, I pay for my purchases at the antique store, and then pipe up and ask them if they would like to buy my bowl...and they DID!!! LOL..So, all in all it was a great thrifting day! (Also picked up some old lace, and more dolls for heads, and some other little stuff)..but, that stuff was found before I dropped Nature Boy off for his test. Ahh..time for bed..Everyone have a great night, and sweet dreams!!

SNEAK PEAK and A LONGGGG DAY!!

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 Edit This 5 Comments »

On my way to bed--I was busy, busy, busy today--I handpainted 20 Paper Clay faces. Finished 2 of Nature Boy's pieces, made 4 of my own assemblage dolls (another mermaid is included in those), and got about half way done with 3 paintings (Two 9 x 12's and an 8 x 8)...took a nap, cooked dinner, and watched WAY TOO MANY episodes of NCIS. Tomorrow--Nature Boy has to go to the college for one of his test, but I will show pics of everything then. Live Artfully!

I recommend this class to everyone!!!

NEWEST PIECE --and THE 600 POUND CASH REGISTER IS FOUND!!

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 Edit This 13 Comments »
Here's my lastest piece..and NATURE BOY found my 600 pound cash register!! Now, I can hear you asking how we lost a 600 pound cash register, so I will elaborate a bit. Two years ago come March, we shut down our brick and mortar antique store. This very nice couple had the biggest antique cash register on consignment in our shop. This thing was ENORMOUS, and it literally took 3 strong, strong men to bring it into the shop. Well, we were leaving, and I called the people and told them that they needed to come get their cash register. They said that they didn't want it, and I could have it, if I could move it...So, my husband and I are packing up, trying to figure out HOW we would get this monstrosity home with us. Finally--I had him back our trailer up to the back steps of the shop, and we took the ramp and put it on the top step, and we literally ROLLED this thing, end over end onto our trailer. We got it home, pulled the trailer into our storage shed out back, and left it there. One day, my husband got bored, and said he was going to take the old cash register apart for me. (I basically wanted the keys at the time)...so, he goes out there--and proceeds to start taking the cash register apart. It took him over a month..and it was WORK. The entire insides were cast iron, and a lot of it, he had to torch to get it apart....He started filling up buckets of parts...Time went on...He would put this bucket here, that bucket there, and more time went on...Fast forward almost 2 years LATER...here I am, making junk dolls, and I remember the cash register, and all it's wonderful metal numbers, and cogs, and keys...and I send NATURE BOY in search of my cash register parts...LOL..In the weeks past he has looked in our shed (a huge building at the bottom edge of our property), under the house, in our storage room in the house, in his brother's garage, in our garage...everywhere. He kept finding buckets of the large pieces, and finally the other day--he found the one bucket that I wanted. Now, I HAVE A WONDERFUL TON OF parts... (none of which I used on this piece above--lol)...but, it's so exciting to get a mess of metal now....and it amazes me how little it takes to amuse me.

FAITH -- ASSEMBLAGE ART DOLL FOUND OBJECT and MY WONDERFUL EMBELLISHMENT SUPPLIER!!!

Sunday, February 08, 2009 Edit This 1 Comment »

Here's "Faith". She is 9 inches long, and made on a piece of old fencing. Her "wings" have been handpainted to match her hand painted middle. An old piece of tin is her body, and there is a tin piece at her bottom. From her neck hangs a blue crystal-like bead. Her face is handpainted Paper Clay. Faith-- though she sometimes faces adversity in the ugliess ways--never loses sight of what is really important in her life. $30.
I have been using a lot of very wonderful Verdigris patina (that lovely green patina) pieces on these dolls. Most have been bought from a super Etsy seller named Terri Ventura --(dimestoreemporium). Terri has been so nice, and today, she featured me and my art dolls on her blog.
Terri is a fantastic artist, and does the coolest jewelry at her shop on etsy called DIMESTOREDAZE.

TRUTH-- ASSEMBLAGE ART DOLL

Sunday, February 08, 2009 Edit This 3 Comments »

Nature Boy (my husband) is really getting into this doll thing. He says to me today -- "I COULD BE AN ARTIST"...and of course--I told him "baby--you can be anything you want to be when you grow up." hehehehheh. He's only 61, so there's still time...LOL LOL.
He found me this piece of cedar in our backyard (the woods), and drilled a hole in the back to make it so that it would hang. He also cut me the shallow dug out part to put the face in. He's such a cool husband!!
Anyway--this is what I made with what he gave me. This is a really cool doll, plus it SMELLS so good!!
Well, back to work--I need about 40 more dolls for stock..but if you are interested--it's $30 (shipping included)..just email me.

But, if you are going to try one, May I suggest that you hold the nails with a pair of needle nose pliers, I hit just the edge of my finger, yesterday, and it caused a very painful pair of blood blisters. PEACE -- ASSEMBLAGE ART DOLL

SOLD

Good Morning!! I finished this doll and another last night (3 total)..I had put the other one on here, but it needed some reconstructing, and now I can't get a good picture of it. It's too cold to go outside (24 degrees last time I looked). Thank Goodness that we are on the downside of winter!!

This piece is a religious piece (to me). I keep thinking of God watching over us, and us being sheep. The bird is carrying a group of leaves (dove--olive branch). So, that is where my brain was at when I created it.

I am suddenly feeling like journaling today..so stay tuned!!

CHERISH- FOUND OBJECT ASSEMBLAGE ART DOLL and A THEIF

Wednesday, February 04, 2009 Edit This 7 Comments »

"CHERISH"-- $50--She's made on an 11 inch piece of old wood, (14 inches long with her legs). The doll has many found objects on her, including an old cricket keeper basket for a "body", and inside a REAL antique bisque Frozen Charlotte doll (found at an estate sale, not bought online). She is wrapped in cheesecloth that has been coffee stained, and has a little bird charm inside the cage with the bisque doll. Hanging from her body is a Tim Holtz tag that reads "CHERISH". At her neck is an antique button that is crocheted over the top of it. She's an absolute cutie, from head to toe. Email me if you want to purchase her.

Now, on to the bad side of this post. I have been robbed!! Well, not really ME...but, well...PETEY THE WONDERDOG has been robbed. There is this sweet, adorable, little puppy that lives about a mile down the road, and today I was outside on the porch, talking on the phone, and the little puppy comes up. Petey is in the house, lounging out in front of the heater, and this little puppy runs up to the porch, and grabs Petey's FAVORITE little stuffed animal, and WHOOSHHHH--Off it goes...that little burger can run!!! LOL LOL..I am hollering (something we do out here in the country) for Nature Boy (who is slower than molasses) to come and rescue the little toy, but that dog was GONE!!! It ran one way, then the other, then turned around and ran as fast as he could towards his home....LOL LOL..Now, I could have been mean, and opened the front door, and MAYBE, just MAYBE --PETEY the LUMP IN FRONT OF THE HEATER WONDERDOG would have jumped up and got his toy...but, oh well...he shouldn't have adapted so nicely to the indoors...lazy dog...LOL LOL LOL..

A VERY LONG, TRYING DAY!

Tuesday, February 03, 2009 Edit This 6 Comments »

Hello!! It's been a longgggggggg day!! I couldn't just type, I needed at least ONE picture, so I chose to show you the only cleaned corner of my studio. The "Be Nice or Leave" on the wall is courtesy of SHE WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING, when my "studio" was her bedroom, and I like that she left behind pieces of her, so I haven't had the heart to paint over them...LOL.. (she also sewed the little bird up at the top on the right hand side. I loveeeeee that little bird!! Anyway--this was the only corner that was presentable, so this is what you get.

Today, I woke up this morning to laughter --thanks to Paul McCartney (yes!! The Beatles Paul)...I dreamt that he showed up on my doorstep, and I had won a contest, so I got to go to England, and hang out with him for a week. When we got to England--(I don't know HOW we got there--we just suddenly emerged in England), there was a bunch of arty women there, and it was for a week of learning art things with Paul McCartney. I literally woke up LAUGHING. It was so much fun!! (I wonder if Tim Holtz knows he has competition out there??)...heheheh.

So, I got moving, had coffee, and took one look at my art room, and almost started crying. It had once again gotten out of hand..(which it seems to do weekly!!), and I started cleaning, and rearranging, and making room. I SO wish that you all lived where I could just deliver boxes and boxes of books for collage..LOL...I cleaned, and I cleaned, and I cleaned..that was 12 hours ago, and I am ALMOST done.***sigh...Maybe I'll finish tonight...

THIS WEEKEND..

Monday, February 02, 2009 Edit This 7 Comments »
Well, This was a long, long weekend. Up early on Saturday..we did the Artist Market, and it went well. My prints were a big hit, and I sold a lot of them. (First time that I have offered prints). Had a good time--SHE WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING came to see me. She's so wonderful. I have the best kid of all time. Everyone around her just loves her! Also, a Director of a very large art show in Huntsville came by my table and told me to enter my work to be juried. That made me feel Special..hehehe. Then we got up on Sunday, and decided to take our work, my art and my husband's carved folk art walking canes (which I haven't told you all about yet)..to the town square thing and sell. It went really well, and I feel we made just about what we would have made with the antiques and collectibles stuff. We might go out of that business...LOL..I had to stop on the way home, and buy 3 more boxes of dominos--they sold like crazy this weekend!! (One lady bought 12 of them)! I also met a local woman that travels a lot and takes all kinds of classes, and she bought a painting, and an original journal page!! That was cool. I feel like my art is too different for small town America--so it surprises me when someone here loves it...lol..But, that's all....just work this weekend--no fun stuff...so, now it's time to go do some fun stuff! Have a happy Artful day!!
